Mrs. Rita Clements
Rita Crocker Clements has served on a variety of governmental commissions and on the boards of many philanthropic and corporate organizations. Notably, from 1972 to 1975, she was a member of the National Advisory Council for Economic Opportunity. She served as First Lady of Texas from 1979 to 1983 during which time she undertook the complete restoration of the Governor's Mansion and founded the Friends of the Governor's Mansion. For that effort, she received the Miss Ima Hogg Special Award from the Winedale Society and the Ruth B. Lester Award from the Texas Historical Commission. She was again First Lady of Texas from 1987 until 1991. In 1991, she was named a Distinguished Alumna of the University of Texas. She was appointed to the University of Texas Board of Regents in 1996 and reappointed in April 2001, where she currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Board. Due to these numerous accomplishments, she was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall fo Fame in 1996.

William P. Clements, Jr. has achieved remarkable accomplishments in both his business and political careers. During his drilling career, Governor Clements founded SEDCO, which grew to be the world's largest offshore drilling company. Governor Clements' accomplishments in politics include having served on the President's Commission on Central America, the President's Commission of Strategic Forces and the Department of Defense Blue Ribbon Defense Panel. He served as Deputy U.S. Secretary of Defense in the Nixon and Ford administrations. In 1979, he won an upset victory to become the first Republican to serve as Texas Governor in over 100 years, since the time of Reconstruction. He ran for the office of Governor again in 1986 and was elected to office. He is currently retired but continues to be very active in politics and philanthropy. Due to his dedicated service, Southern Methodist University has honored him with the Mustang Award for lifetime service, an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and the Distinguished Alumni Award.
