The amazing journey of La Belle began in 1684 with La Salle's departure from France, and continued with the ship's sinking in Matagorda Bay two years later. A 20-year hunt to find the shipwreck, and the remarkable 1995 discovery of its remains by archaeologists with the Texas Historical Commission, led to one of the most extraordinary engineering feats ever associated with an archaeological excavation.
Three hundred years later, the ship raised from its watery grave and brought back to life. The ship's discovery, unprecedented excavation, and painstaking conservation is a remarkable story. La Belle may have been the ship that changed history, but it also changed science, pushing archaeological processes and technologies to the limits.
